To obtain this license, it is necessary to previously carry out the approved safety and navigation practices, with duration of 48 hours, as well as short-range radio operator training. The new regulations indicate that the latter must have been previously completed for the PER, PNB or Yacht Skipper licenses.

In the case of wanting to obtain the authorization for the government of sailing vessels, sailings should be carried out for duration of no less than 16 hours. These sailing practices should only be done once. If you have previously performed these practices for the PER, PNB or Yacht Skipper licenses, it will not be necessary to redo them. The student will also have at his/her disposal the long-range radio-operator course, which is voluntary.

All approved practices can be done before or after the theoretical exam with a maximum of 18 months.

To obtain the Yacht Captain license, regulatory practices of safety and navigation are necessary, which must have a minimum duration of 48 hours. Of these, at least 36h will be in cruise regime while each student must perform a full day and night time navigation guard.

Security and navigation practices are based safe journeying and navigation with regards to attributions of the Yacht Captain license, so as to not address issues that have been covered in previous courses.

For a safe journey and navigation, there is increased time at sea so that the student can get a feel for long periods of navigation that could be performed using this license. For a correct assimilation, it is vital for each student to perform guard duty during the practices, along with common practices and responsibilities. The objectives to be achieved through this task are classified into 5 sections:

  • Use of safety and fire protection material
  • Preparation of the defeat
  • Checks before going to the sea
  • Effective navigation guard
  • Navigation. Take bearings and delays
The officially approved sailing practices of 16 hours are only carried out once to obtain the nautical sports qualification (if the student has already done these practices before he/she will not have to do redo them). Regulatory practices of sailing should be done in a sailboat of more than 6 meters in length, in “voyage regime”, with a minimum duration of 16 hours (one stop of 1 hour every 4 hours of navigation). The agenda will proceed as follows:
  • Theory of sailing
  • Cordage and sails
  • Sailing manoeuvres
  • Advanced sailing manoeuvres
  • Safety manoeuvres
  • Safety in sailing
Evaluation of the practices: The instructor will evaluate the capacity of the examinee according to the following points, and will be able to suspend the student if any of the following requirements are not met.

  • Punctuality and assistance (less than 95% attendance is not allowed)
  • Compliance to school regulations
  • Active participation and close attention to the training by the student

Requirements for the practices on the boat

  • Depending on the weather and weather conditions the student must wear appropriate clothing.
  • The student's footwear must be of white or neutral rubber sole.
  • It is recommended to use sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.

School regulations for conducting practices
The nautical schools are obliged to notify the Generalitat of Catalonia several days before the radio and all navigation practices on the number of attendees. For this reason, it is necessary to notify the school 4 days in advance of one’s participation, and make the payment.

Once the nautical school has notified the Generalitat, registration can no longer be changed unless it is due to demonstrable force majeure *. If a student does not show up, they cannot be evaluated and the practice will not be recognized. Failure of a registered student to attend will also prevent other interested students from participating, as the nautical school cannot sell the reserved placement.
